Course Description

System-focused content addresses the normal physiologic and pathologic mechanisms of disease that serve as the foundation for advanced clinical assessment, decision-making, and management. Physiologic changes are compared and contrasted over the life span and developmental physiology, normal etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations of commonly found/observed altered health states and responses to illness and treatment modalities are examined.

Prerequisites

BSN Met with a score of 3 or (Research Met (NURS 225) with a score of 3 and Community Met (NURS 440) with a score of 3 and Ldr Management Met (NURS 490) with a score of 3 and Population Hlth Met (NURS 445) with a score of 3 and Nrs Management Met (NURS 491) with a score of 3) or (EXSC 510 and EXSC 525

Rationale

Advanced practice nursing focuses not only on management of current disease states, but upon the prevention of disease advancement. Understanding the pathophysiology of disease process is critical to effectively evaluating the patient, planning care, and facilitating quality patient care.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of physiological and pathophysiological processes to diseases and conditions manifested across the lifespan.
  2. Integrate concepts of pathophysuiology to clinical reasoning to provide health promotion, disease prevention and management.
  3. Differentiate between normal and abnormal compensatory mechanisms as the body responds to disease.
  4. Integrate the Christian worldview into the discussion of pathophysiology.
  5. Evaluate genetic influences and risk factors related to diseases/disorders.

Discussion Board Forums (3)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to post a thread of at least 500 words and post two replies of at least 250 words each.

For each thread, the student must include at least two scholarly citations published within the last 5 years in current APA format. Each reply must cite at least one source.

Annotated Bibliography

The student will identify five scholarly sources published within the last 5 years related to a clinical area of expertise. These sources should be peer-reviewed and valid (i.e., present a strong level of evidence). The student will provide a brief review of each article’s strengths and weaknesses. Case Study (2)

The student will write two case studies. Each case may be based on an actual or fictional patient (if actual, remember to leave out any identifying information). The student will develop a background of the patient including age, race, diagnosis, signs and symptoms, family history, social history, and medications/allergies. The case must include an in-depth discussion of the pathophysiology of the selected disease to the cellular level. The student will also discuss a holistic plan of care including any genetic counseling/testing, patient education, and physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural care the patient should receive. The case study must be 3 to 4 pages (excluding the title and reference pages) and include at least 4 scholarly sources published within the last 5 years. The case studies should use current APA format.

Cardiovascular–Pulmonary Presentation

The student will develop a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation on a cardiovascular–pulmonary disorder/disease discussed in the McCance text. The presentation must provide information about the incidence, prevalence, and pathophysiology of the disease/disorder to the cellular level. The presentation must educate professional nurses on assessment and care/treatment specific to this disorder. Patient education for management, cultural, and spiritual considerations for care must also be addressed. The presentation must specifically address how the disease/disorder affects one of the following age groups: infant/child, adult, or elderly. The presentation must be at least 15 slides (excluding the title and reference slides) and include 3 to 5 scholarly sources published within the last 5 years and cited in current APA format.

Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material. Each quiz is open-book and open-notes, contains 15 multiple-choice questions, and has a time limit of 30 minutes.

Final Exam
