A Comparison of What I Have Learned
The healthcare profession has significantly evolved, and along with this improvement came the development of nursing modules. The theories create the foundation for nursing practice and a proper framework for the acquisition of knowledge in the healthcare industry (Smith & Parker, 2015). Among the different approaches in healthcare, Dorothea Orem and Betty Neuman Theory have emerged as the most significant players in the promotion wellbeing.
Dorothea Orem’s model of nursing originates from the ability of human beings being able to adapt to one’s environment. According to the theory, people can heal faster when given an opportunity for self-care. The case study to prove the model’s statement was conducted in a rehabilitation facility where patients were encouraged to deal with their health conditions concerning recovery from drug abuse independently (Santos, Ramos & Fonseca, 2017). From the study, independent patients were able to recover faster than those depended on healthcare professionals.
Betty Neuman Theory, on the other hand, constitutes the relationship of individuals to stress and reactions towards it. The core of the model is formed with energy sources that are the genetic structure, organ strength, normal environmental temperature, response patterns and the composition of the ego. The energy sources are surrounded by resistance lines which are, rational and flexible defense lines (Tovar, Suarez & Muñoz, 2016). Resistance lines act as representatives of the internal elements that aid the patients in dealing with stressors.
A study was performed in a local healthcare facility dealing with mental disorders. To prove and learn more about the theory. Depression patients were the primary samples used in the study to determine the Betty Neuman Theory. The nurses worked by protecting the patients’ states of body equilibrium and strengthening their dynamic nature (Ahmadi & Sadeghi, 2017). The purpose of the medical practitioners was simply to retain the body system’s ability. The intervention was proven to be much effective than administration of pharmacology medication to the mentally ill patients.
A Comparison of the Case Study to My Nursing Practice
The healthcare organization I work for encourages patient-centered care where the patient is given the platform to make significant decisions and take control of his treatment. It indicates the practice of Dorothea Orem’s increases the chances of recovery since care is self-induced (Smith & Parker, 2015). For instance, a typhoid patient was asked to choose between home and hospital medication depending on his preferences. He selected home treatment and gave the reason for the warm care and support he receives from his family. Later on, it was noticed that his recovery process was faster than the hospitalised patients because of the mindset and ability to take charge in his treatment.
