Social Awareness and War Dances in Alexie’s Work

Social Awareness and War Dances in Alexieâ€s Work

In the middle of the title of the Sherman Alexieâ€s story, War Dances, Alexie finds himself listening to a Native American singing a healing song for his dying father. In other scene, the writer reasserts the fragile bonds of cultures between two generations of dispossessed people. In his opinion, the narrator asserts that “The only life I can save is my ownâ€. I find that to be untrue and ironical. I find the writerâ€s narration being too simplistic and affirming by undercutting the importance of self-awareness in the context of cultural bonds. What Alexie presents to the reader is ironical since it is much of a literal fiction, instead of expressing how the actual ways in which life is presented such as the meaning of sufferings, mutual affection and so on. The writer only presents a blackly amusing Native American scene which derails the complexity between the actual performance and the truth.

Alexie has used employed the awareness of the contradictions of identity to animate most of his stories. In addition, the complexities of the contradictions of the characters identities have been the prominent feature in Alexieâ€s work of which, some of them draw from his experience as an adolescent. As such, Alexie has been able to understand the difficulties his characters encounter in creating new identities for them when they had been bound to the old identities. Much of Alexiâ€s sense of identity has been highlighted in novels such as Reservation Blues in which he blended the traditional and the present rock and roll cultures so as to show the complexities of the Native American identity. Nevertheless, in most of Alexies stories, characters feel trapped in their limited identities such as the in the very first poem of War Dances collection of stories- “Limitedâ€. In that poem, a man tries to hit a stray do with his car but it escapes the trap. However, from the manâ€s voice “Donâ€t give me that face
Unless youâ€re going to do Something about it†and his intent, he is trapped in his frustrations and the man further provokes the narrator to free him from the trap. Unfortunately, the poem reveals that the man does not get to be free from his limited identity and therefore, continues to live in his frustrations (Alexie, 2010).
